St Joseph
Protector of Carmel

St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus and spouse of the Virgin Mary, holds a special role as the protector of the Carmelite Order and patron of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites. His significance stems from his biblical portrayal as a just, humble, and faithful servant of God, entrusted with safeguarding the Holy Family. These qualities resonate deeply with the Carmelite charism, which emphasizes contemplation, prayer, and devotion to Mary.

In the Discalced Carmelite tradition, St. Joseph’s role as protector was championed by St. Teresa of Ávila, the 16th-century reformer of the Carmelite Order. St. Teresa had a profound devotion to St. Joseph, crediting him with miraculous interventions, including her recovery from illness. She named many of her reformed monasteries after him and urged her communities to emulate his obedience and trust in God. St. Teresa wrote in her *Autobiography* (Chapter 6), “I took for my advocate and lord the glorious St. Joseph… I do not remember ever having asked him for anything that he did not obtain for me.” Her conviction established St. Joseph as a spiritual guardian of the Discalced Carmelites, a role that endures in both the religious and secular branches.

For the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCDS), St. Joseph is a model of lay spirituality. Secular Carmelites, who live out the Carmelite charism in the world, look to St. Joseph as a patron who exemplifies balancing daily responsibilities with deep faith. His silent, steadfast service—whether protecting Mary and Jesus during the flight to Egypt or providing for them through his carpentry—mirrors the secular Carmelite’s call to live contemplatively amid worldly duties. His purity, humility, and trust in divine providence inspire members to pursue holiness in ordinary life.

St. Joseph’s patronage also reflects his universal role as protector of the Church, declared by Pope Pius IX in 1870. For Carmelites, this extends to safeguarding the spiritual mission of Carmel: a life of prayer, sacrifice, and union with God through the scapular and devotion to Mary. Secular Carmelites invoke St. Joseph’s intercession to guide their communities and protect their commitment to the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience, adapted to their lay state.

In summary, St. Joseph’s role as protector of Carmel and patron of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites is rooted in his exemplary life and St. Teresa’s devotion. He stands as a guardian and model, guiding Carmelites to live faithfully in service to God and others.

Memorare to Saint Joseph

Remember, O most illustrious Patriarch St. Joseph, on the testimony of St. Teresa, thy devoted client, never has it been heard that anyone who invoked thy protection or sought thy mediation has not obtained relief.

In this confidence I come before thee, my loving protector, chaste spouse of Mary, foster-father of the Savior of men, and dispenser of the treasures of His Sacred Heart. Despise not my earnest prayer, but graciously hear and obtain my petition

(here mention your request).

Let us pray.  O God, Who by Thine ineffable Providence didst vouchsafe to choose St. Joseph to be the spouse of Thy most holy Mother, grant, we beseech Thee, that he whom we venerate as our protector on earth may be our intercessor in Heaven, Who livest and reignest forever and ever. Amen.

St. Joseph, patron of a happy death, pray for us.

Ancient Prayer to St. Joseph
(over 1900 years old)

O St. Joseph whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the Throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires.

O St. Joseph do assist me by your powerful intercession and obtain for me from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, Our Lord; so that having engaged here below your Heavenly power I may offer my Thanksgiving and Homage to the Loving of Fathers.

O St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms.  I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart.  Press him to my name and kiss His fine Head for me, and ask Him to return the Kiss when I draw my dying breath.

St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls, pray for us.  Amen
